After a long series of friendlies, Zenit Saint Petersburg returns to action this Wednesday as Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart travel to Petrovsky Stadium.
The big change to Dick Advocaat’s starting eleven is obviously Andrei Arshavin’s move to Arsenal but additionally Sébastien Puygrenier has been loaned to Bolton. However in addition to bringing in Szabolcs Huszti from Hannover 96, the addition of veteran midfielder and Russian international Igor Semshov from Dinamo bodes well for Zenit. Reuniting him with his former teammate in Moscow, Danni, Zenit’s attack is ready to go back into high gear.
For the match Zenit will be without Tomáš Hubočan, who is expected to miss five weeks minimum with a broken collarbone and Nicolas Lombaerts. Stuttgart is in the midst of the six match unbeaten streak under new coach Markus Babbel but will be without Timo Gebhart, Sebastian Rudy, Matthieu Delpierre and Yıldıray Baştürk, in addition to having doubts with Sami Khedira.
Determined to hoist the trophy Igor Semshov said:
“We are facing a well-organised team with a young, ambitious coach but I’m sure that we are able to win the UEFA Cup even without Arshavin.”
