Zenit Saint Petersburg advance in UEFA Cup

By: j | February 26th, 2009

Defending UEFA Cup champions Zenit Saint Petersburg advance in the UEFA Cup after 2-1 victory over VfB Stuttgart at the Neckarstadion. With the victory Dick Advocaat’s side will now advance against Udinese of Serie A with the opening match on March 12.

The victory for Zenit was hard fought as the German side put up a great fight but owe much of their demise to bad finishing before the break. After the home side had controlled much of the run of the play, Zenit took the lead two minutes before the break when Danni’s cross was sent to the back of the net by Igor Semshov who was just outside of the six yard box. With clear defensive mission in mind, Zenit was holding on the lead when Timo Gebhart brought the home supporters to their feet as he equalized the match. However four minutes before the whistle, poor defending by VfB left ‘keeper Jens Lehmann in a precarious position resulting in Danni crossing to Russian international Viktor Faitzulin, who subsequently turned the ball into the net.
