Will Rubin Kazan clinch the Championship this weekend?
By: j | October 31st, 2008With four match-days left in the campaign Rubin Kazan sits on the verge of winning the Rosgosstrakh Championship of Russia. Excluding Zenit Saint Petersburg’s victory last year, since 1992 the championship has nested in Moscow divided between Spartak Moscow, Lokomotiv Moscow and CSKA Moscow. With some help from Spartak Moscow, Kurban Berdyev’s squad can clinch the title with a victory over Saturn Moscow Oblast.
The race for the final European spots are tight. The two “can’t miss” matches this weekend, beyond Rubin’s possible victory celebration, is the great CSKA Moscow – Spartak Moscow battle with Spartak looking to overturn Koni’s seven year domination of the rivalry and Lokomotiv Moscow’s crucial match against Dynamo.
With CSKA running on all cylinders the challenge will be great for Spartak. Spartak will have Martin Stranzl and Cristián Maidana back but Welliton, Mozart and the extremely promising Vladislav Ryzhkov will be absent. Koni are fully fit with the exception of Chidi Odiah. Veteran CSKA
Elvir Rahimić commented in response to Spartak’s quest for a victory:
“Since I’ve been with CSKA I’ve forgotten what it’s like to congratulate Spartak players on a win. I hope I won’t get a reminder.”
