The Problem with Goalkeeping
By: Ivan | February 19th, 2007
Times of Lev Yashin passed away. Now in Russia nobody wants to be goalkeeper. Almost every club in Premier League has a vacant first number jersey. The only exception is Igor Akinfeev, CSKA and national team main goalie who has no problem with doing his job and earned attention from Arsenal and Milan.
Let’s see what happened to others.
Two reserve goalkeepers of national team fit no more: one of them become a couch, another relegated to First League. Same about the top clubs. Spartak Moscow wanted to sign Marco Amelia from Livorno and had time to scare other club keepers with possible deportation to squad B. Result: main goalie Kowalewski ran out of form, reserve goalie Khomich not yet in form, third goalie Zuev got his mind changed. Note that Amelia have not signed!
Alexey Zuev suddenly claimed that he found God and want to dedicate his life to Him. Zuev critisized Darwin and his followers – in conversation with football media! He also wants to record an album with professional musicians. And immediately make his debut in the eye of camera. The song is after his teammate Denis Boyarintsev. Lyrics: “He is a bit bald/But it doesn’t matter/Running forward and backward down the flank/Feeling no regret for himself”. Wow.
Lokomotiv Moscow finished third in last season and also want to fix position in goal. Club signed Ivan Pelizzoli from Reggina who once, then in Roma, was called a “second Buffon”. But one of the pre-season games shows that it’s a Adriatic sea gap between GiGi and Ivan.
Hope that at least one of the Russian top clubs find good man for playing in goal.
