Spartak Moskva defeats Rubin Kazan 2-0
By: j | April 25th, 2009In match-day two of the Valery Karpin-era, it is abundantly clear that Spartak Moskva is an entirely different squad under his leadership. Along with a deepened respect for the youth development Mr Karpin as instilled a sense of pride of wearing the crest that he knows so well. Following last weeks 2-0 victory Terek Grozny, Spartak management were pleased but media pundits expected the club to come out of Saturdays match-up against Rubin Kazan more black and blue than красно-белых.
Those forecasts were proven wrong today as Spartak dispatched Kazan 2-0 in front of a superb group of traveling supporters. Following a scoreless opening half in which the stormy sides of Kazan painted an ominous backdrop for the match, bursting flares from traveling fans lead the way to the Rubin goal as Austria’s Martin Stranzl found the mark four minutes in as he out-fought at least four Rubin defenders to rise high and nod in Alex’s corner. Challenges were crisp as Spartak was not going to give up any ground uncontested and very quickly it was apparent this battle was theirs to be won. Just past the hour Spartak capitalized on a over-committed Rubin side as Welliton was played a perfect though ball down the right channel and chipped the ball over Rubin ‘keeper Sergey Ryzhikov to bring the match to a 2-0 conclusion.
