Map of Russian Football

Russian Premier League contains 16 clubs and there are 17 days left to start. So tomorrow I’ll began to introduce you the teams – one by one. Now I want you to take a look on the map of Russian football.

The Moscow region is dense but it provides more interest for teams that are outside the core. Stories from South will be about agricultural training fields and crazy fans throwing stones. Stories from Siberia and Far East – about long flights, bears and tigers. Story from Northwest – about the greatest fan support for one team. And also a lot of stories about numberless Moscow derbies. A little arithmetics: there are 7 teams to play 42 matches among them! Unique.

  Interesting to see a visual representation like that. Is there a particular region of the country that produces the best footballers?

  Hi, Eddie. We don’t have youth academies like Ajax or Barca so good players can appear everywhere. I give you an example of footballers who play outside Russia.
  Alexey Smertin (ex-Chelsea, Portsmouth, Charlston and now Fulham) is from Barnaul, Siberia. Alexandr Kerzhakov of Sevilla is from Saint Petersburg. And Ivan Saenko of Nurnberg is from Voronezh, 500 miles south from Moscow.

  Sam, they are Luch-Energiya (means Ray-Energie) of Vladivostok city. Last season they had a chance to promote to Intertoto cup! Imagine possible astonishment of European clubs for playing somewhere near Japan.
