if you can’t play with the big boys move along
By: j | August 29th, 2008I’ve been posting for quite some time now that if any club seriously wanting to bring in Andrei Arshavin, it was easy. Pay the money, which given current market conditions, wasn’t that extraordinary. However the (english-speaking) media liked to continue the myth that Zenit was being unreasonable without ever mentioning (or was it being aware and actually speaking to the parties involved) that offers were grossly lower than the asking price, involved heavy incentive clauses with no guarantee minimum to Zenit and involved long term payment plans.
After humbling Manchester United 2-1 in the Super Cup, Dick Advocaat noted “the deal is closed” as Tottenham best offer was “₤16m”, a full ₤6m under the asking price “with respect, that is not enough so that’s the end of it.”

you were asking too much. tottenham could easily afford 22 million pounds, thats not the issue. the issue is the fact that zenit was overvaluing their player. everyone knows tottenham would have gone for 20 million but zenit wouldn’t budge, even though they said they would. its all good, spurs will be fine without him and zenit doesnt need the money anyway. carry on, and congrats on beating manure.

Well if they had the money, they did show it. They came in with a discount offer, layered in with incentives on their own performance and tried to structure payment longer than a year. Based upon other prices this wasn’t close to being too much and I question how serious Tottenham was.
