Champions League hunt: Samara Kryliya Sovetov
By: j | September 8th, 2008Through our review of the Champions League race in the Rosgosstrakh Football Championship we’ve already looked at top-of-the-table Rubin Kazan, Dynamo Moscow, Spartak Moscow, Amkar Perm’ and CSKA Moscow. With this mind it’s time to turn our attention to the very underrated Samara Kryliya Sovetov.
The Samara club, led by manager Leonid Slutsky has put together an extremely formidable attack and excluding a recent set-back to Zenit Saint Petersburg have been one of Rosgosstrakh hottest clubs and without a loss since returning from the Euro Championship break. They have shored up their attack and now pair twenty-four year-old Yevgeny Savin and veteran Jan Koller at striker. They are supported well with a very fluid and reliable midfield of Ruslan Adzhindzhal, Anton Bober and Andrei Tikhonov with Czech Republic veteran JJiří Jarošík and Oleg Ivanov at the wing using a 3-5-2. There counter-attacking work has grown considerably of late and are one of the most powerful attacks in the league. One the biggest advantages they have coming down the stretch-run is a highly favourable schedule and the lack of European matches. Clearly Samara Kryliya Sovetov has a great opportunity to climb up the table and is in perfect position to do so.
