Arsenal’s offer still fall short for Andrei Arshavin
By: j | January 21st, 2009As Arsenal’s casual efforts to sign Andrei Arshavin fall one-third behind Zenit Saint Petersburg’s £18 valuation of the Russian international, it is becoming increasingly clear that suggestions that his arrival in North London were false. While it it not surprising given the ongoing saga of Mr. Arshavin, as of this writing no other clubs have formally made an offer to the club, regardless of rumours linking him to Manchester City and it is entirely possible that he could be with Zenit this campaign.
Zenit Saint Petersburg general director Maxim Mitrofanov said of the situation:
”The situation has not changed since Friday, which means Arsenal would like to pay only £12 million, not one cent more. And we, at Zenit, are ready to discuss with them about maybe a better offer from our side.
”We are ready to make a step forward to them, but they should do the same. However, I have told the people from Arsenal we are ready to discuss a lot of things to make the situation easier for them.
”They have a deadline, as I understand, until 26th January, because after that, they should have some time to get another player and I respect this position.”
In-truth Zenit is willing to structure a deal to make this more digestible for the English Premier League club but they hare imposing a price ceiling and sticking to their guns as well as using the players agent to nudge the deal along. Andrei Arshavin’s agent, the oft-quoted Dennis Lachter, is trying to edge Zenit lower by using the media to suggest he will buy out his contract next November if a deal isn’t worked out. In such an event, Andrei Arshavin would need to payout a portion of his contract / valuation with the formula resulting ultimately reducing a significantly reduced return on Zenit’s investment.
