Arsenal close in on Andrei Arshavin
By: j | January 6th, 2009Arsenal appear to be closing in on Zenit Saint Petersburg’s Andrei Arshavin as the UEFA Cup champions have comfirmed negotiations are proceeding with the deal nearing completion in the next two weeks.
For all account Zenit have maintained a hard-line stance with £20m needed to take the Russian international to the north London club from beautiful Saint Petersburg. With Arsenal now falling out of the top four in the table, three points behind Aston Villa, they are assumed to be more receptive to the deal. Whether the Gunners are the alone in England bidding on his services is another thing as with Tottenham’s £15m purchase of Jermain Defoe from Portsmouth is likely to leave them out sufficient funds for the Zenit sharp-shooter.
Zenit leader Dick Advocaat has acknowledged the interest from the English side and while complimentary of his goal-scorer saying he could play anywhere, he seems resigned that he will not be returning by noting Danni will take his position.
As always, this is a highly speculative area and I expect many twists and turns before it is settled.
