Season Preview: Krylya Sovetov Samara. Gang
By: Ivan | February 28th, 2007
Location. Samara is situated on the banks of Volga river. Samara’ fans probably were the greatest supporters in Russia, especially in 2004 when Krylya Sovetov finished third in Premier League. Stadium Metallurg was always overcrowded – it’s a pity that times passed by.
Team. Krylya Sovetov are the only non-Moscow team which played through all 15 Premier League seasons. Rise of the team was related to activity of club president German Tkachenko but his departure doomed Krylya for survival. New Krylya’ coach Sergey Oborin once earned fame with claim: “I am Oborin! There was no goal!â€
Stars. Krylya were always famous for team spirit and had no leader since Andrey Karyaka signed with Benfica Lisbon. Today Ukranian Andrey Husin and South African Matthew Booth are the most respected players.
Transfers. Former Man Yoo and Rangers winger Andrey Kanchelskis retired from football and there are no transfers yet. Maybe that’s what they really need.
Rivals. It can be Rubin Kazan – another team from Volga region.
Fact. There was a big scandal last season around defender Serge Branco and assistant coach Omari Tetradze. Rumors had it that Tetradze hitted Branco with a chair or even threatened him with a gun. And player deserved it.
