Season Preview: FC Moskva. Artifact

By: Ivan | March 5th, 2007

MoskvaLocation. Guess where? Yep, it’s Moscow. Capital of Russia has financial potential to host even half of Premier League’ teams. Moscow major Yuriy Luzhkov, who is a huge football and other sports fan (see picture), was a big man behind FC Moskva during some time.

Team. Till 2003 team was called Torpedo-ZIL aka Automobilists. Then they changed name for Torpedo-Metallurg for a season and after all became FC Moskva. And this new name meant completely new team.

Yuriy LuzhkovStar. The special one is midfielder Sergey Semak, the most beloved player of CSKA fans. He left CSKA for PSG but soon returned to Moscow. Now he plays for another club but CSKA’ supporters still love him and always sing “Hey Semak, score a goal”!

Transfers. Lost their top scorer Dmitriy Kirichenko to Saturn Ramenskoe but signed Bosnian attacking midfielder Branislav Krunic. Now they have great selection of AM’s – Semak, Krunic and Argentinian Pablo Borrientos.

Rivals. Any team from Moscow. And read a story about Tom.

Fact. FC Moskva’ press officer Maxim Motin has a blog. And coach Leonid Slutskiy, who was called Russian Mourinho by biggest daily newspaper, has a message board. They are really up-to-date!

Torpedo is such a better name especially since there are so many other Moscow teams as you have pointed out.

Fantastic page Ivan! Well done, you have put a lot of work into it. I watched a few months of Russian league (on tv) last year when I was in Yoshkar-Ola and Petrozavodsk. For me the classiest player (sorry, not a Russian) was the Moroccan (I think) called Magiri (something like that). Scored some fantastic goals. I enjoyed watching Nalchik play too. I wonder why they went so badly in the 2nd half of the season.
    cheerio,

Eddie, there were two Torpedoes - Torpedo Moscow and Torpedo-ZIL. ZIL was overtaken by nickel tycoon Mikhail Prokhorov and renamed to FC Moskva. And original Torpedo relegated to First League.

Thanks Alan! Maybe you mean David Mujiri? He’s Georgian and plays for Krylya Sovetov Samara. Really good player.
Pleased to see Skryabin at your webpage :)
